With less than a week to go for the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission in a release stated it is working to curb the unaccounted money used during polls to influence voters and it has seized cash and liquor worth Rs 399.505 crore and Rs 162.892 crore, respectively.
The monitoring of money which is being overseen by the EC-appointed Expenditure Observers, also seized other materials such as drugs worth Rs 708.549 crore, precious metals worth Rs 318.495 crore and freebies worth Rs 29.342 crores.
The release further added that the latest seizures by the body showed a “substantial jump” when compared to the seizures made till 28 March.
In the case of seized cash, the data showed a spike of 97.55 percent while the data on seized liquor showed a jump of 43.57, between 28 March and 4 April.
The data also revealed that till 4 April, the total seized amount of cash and kind stood at Rs 1618.78, showing a jump of Rs 945.045 crore in a week since 28 March.
