A 90-year-old man showed courage and presence of mind to foil an attempted robbery by his grandson and an accomplice, both of whom have been arrested, police said on Sunday.
Rajat, 21, sent the accomplice, Rishabh, 23, to his maternal grandfather Ram Lal Miglan's house in Rohini's Sector 7, Delhi, on the afternoon of 10 June.
Rishabh gained entry to the house by posing as a technician out to check their cooking gas cylinder.
When the ageing Miglan and Rishabh went to the kitchen, Rajat entered the house by wearing a helmet to avoid recognition by his grandparents.
He tried to choke his 84-year-old grandmother Shakuntala Devi, who screamed for help, police said. The grandmother sustained minor injuries in the attack, including a broken tooth.
An alert Miglan caught hold of Rishabh in the kitchen and also raised an alarm, after which neighbours rushed to their rescue and caught the two men. The couple will be rewarded by the police for showing courage.
Rajat admitted to the police that he had hatched the robbery plan since his grandparents had received a handsome sum of money after selling their house. The two bought a toy gun to threaten their intended victims. The toy gun was seized from them.
Both the accused are reportedly unemployed.
