Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) employees went on strike in the capital today, after a 42-year-old bus driver was beaten to death in a road rage incident on Sunday morning. The deceased’s family, and the protesting workers demanded a Rs 1 crore compensation, dismissing the Rs 5 lakh amount announced by the Delhi government.

The victim, Ashok Kumar, was allegedly beaten to death by a young man after the bus grazed his bike in the Mundka area of west Delhi. Kumar was pulled out and repeatedly struck by the young man with his helmet, until he succumbed.

Shockingly, according to the police, none of the passengers, or passersby came forward to save Kumar . The accused was arrested on Sunday night, following which the workers declared a strike on Monday.

DTC drivers and conductors also held a demonstration outside the Rohini bus depot demanding better security for them.

BJP is doing politics over this case. Strict actions need to be taken on the way DTC drivers and conductors are treated.

– Gopal Rai, Delhi Transport Minister

Rai added that he will submit a detailed report to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the incident. The government has also declared to offer a permanent position in the transport department to one of the family members of the deceased.
