A car driven by a drunk woman jumped the divider on a Punjabi Bagh flyover and rammed into another car, killing a 38-year-old woman and leaving her 13-year-old daughter critically injured. The incident took place late night on Friday, 9 November.

According to the police, the car that had jumped the divider, a Maruti S-Cross, was being driven by a 22-year-old woman identified as Shivani Malik, who was drunk. While they arrested her, the two women and two men who were also in the car with her, had reportedly fled the scene, Hindustan Times reported.

In the other car, a Mahindra Quanto, two brothers Sudhir Sardana and Vimal Sardana, along with their wives and children, were coming back home after visiting a temple in Chhatarpur. They had just reached a flyover adjacent to the Punjabi Bagh flyover, when Mailk’s car jumped the divider and rammed into theirs, the report added.

“Locals and witnesses said that the speed of the car approaching from opposite direction, a Maruti S-Cross, was so high that it went up in the air after hitting the divider and after hitting the Quanto, it turned turtle on another car that was passing by. Passersby stopped and helped the occupants of the cars get out.”

They also called the Police Control Room, to notify the police of the incident.

The deceased woman, identified as Poonam, and her daughter Chetanya, were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Poonam was declared dead on arrival, while Chetanya, who sustained multiple fractures and head injury, was admitted for treatment, the report added.

Poonam and Chetanya were both sitting right behind the driver’s seat, which is the part where Malik’s car rammed into.

A case of causing death due to negligence, rash and negligent driving, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as well as several other sections under the IPC have been registered at Punjabi Bagh police station against Malik, who works at a salon in Noida, DCP Monika Bhardwaj told HT.
