A day after Dr Kafeel Khan’s younger brother, Kashif Jameel, was shot at by two identified bike-borne assailants in Gorakhpur, his mother sought police protection for their family on Monday, 11 June.
On Sunday night, Jameel sustained firearm injuries on his neck, chin and right upper arm after he was shot at thrice in the Humayunpur north area near JP Hospital in Gorakhpur. However, his condition was later said to be stable.
While an FIR has been filed against unknown persons by the police regarding the incident, Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shalabh Mathur said they are waiting for a written complaint from the family.
Reacting to the incident, Dr Khan said, “I have always said they will try to kill us.” Earlier on Monday, Khan had told ANI that while his brother was recovering but a case had not been registered yet.
He is recovering now. A case has not been registered yet as the police are waiting for his health to improve so that he can tell them what actually happened. He was shot last night just 500 meters from where the chief minister resides (when in Gorakhpur mandir).Dr Kafeel Khan
Jameel was reportedly transferred to the BRD Medical College and Hospital after an emergency surgery was performed on him. He is currently under observation for 48 hours, the report cited doctors as saying.
As of now, the motive behind the attack has not been uncovered.
Regarding the incident, Dr Kafeel's brother, Aadil, was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying:
Kafeel and I were in Kushinagar to attend an Iftar party hosted by the doctor community, and heard the news of our brother being attacked on our way back home. Two bike-borne miscreants came from behind and shot at Kashif. He mustered the courage to hire a taxi and reached the Star Hospital himself.
Kafeel Khan, an accused in the Gorakhpur tragedy involving the death of 63 children, was released on bail last month after he wrote a letter detailing the events that had unfolded in August last year. In his letter, Khan had alleged that he had been made a scapegoat for what was a ‘total administrative failure at the higher level.’
Khan had also alleged in his letter that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was angry as the Gorakhpur tragedy had made it to the media, following which the police had begun to hound him and his family.
'This is Yogi’s Gunda Raj’
Following the shooting on Khan’s brother, several people took to Twitter to slam the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government, with Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani also taking a dig at PM Narendra Modi’s ‘acche din.’
