In June 2018, Humane Society International (HSI) India rescued 36 dogs from two trucks which were destined for a slaughterhouse in Aizawl, Mizoram. Police got involved and HSI was given temporary custody of the beaten-up dogs. And eventually, after much fight with the Aizawl Dog Meat Seller Association, they won permanent custody of these furry little ones in court.

But what should’ve been a happy story here, hasn’t quite been so. A year since being rescued from brutal death, these 15 dogs still await a home.

Shifted From One Home to Another

“The dogs had been traumatised because of the abuse they had been through,” said Rahul Sehgal, the Senior Director of HSI.

When they were found, the dogs were tied in gunny bags and dumped on top of one another, says a report from HSI. Many of them had severe infections and injured limbs, Some furry ones even died due to rabies and distemper.

After being rescued, the dogs were not only treated but also given behavioural training. They were then shifted to Ahmedabad, where the drive to give them each a new home began.

That, however, did go turn out to be very successful.

Now, the dogs have been moved to RESQ, an animal welfare organisation based in Pune, and they have launched fundraising efforts and an intensive adoption campaign in hopes to get these dogs happily and successfully re-homed.

“There’s something different about this bunch of dogs, it’s like they’re evolved beings...the kind that inspire you. The kind that have seen the worst and have come out with non-stop wagging tails. If that doesn’t teach you one of life’s biggest lessons, what else will?”
Neha Panchamiya, Founder and President of RESQ

“Anyone who takes these dogs home will truly be as blessed as they are, they're truly unique in their own way,” she added.

Now that you’ve got the back story, get ready to have your hearts melted by these furry ones’ profiles. And, maybe, one!
