Delhi saw a sudden change in weather with the sky turning dark within minutes between 5:00 and 5:30 pm on the evening of Saturday, 9 June.
At least 35 flights were diverted due to strong winds and dust storms hit parts of the National Capital Region, including parts of Noida and Gurugram, reported PTI.
However, normalcy of operations have now been restored at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, reported ANI.
Services on the Red Line and the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro were affected briefly due to snags on a few stretches because of the dust storm.
The wind speed touched 96 kmph, according to the Safdarjung observatory. The high-velocity winds uprooted a number of trees and disrupted airport operations.
The downed trees and the subsequent rains led to traffic snarls in Lutyens' Delhi, south Delhi and other areas. However, the dust storm pushed the temperature down by a few notches on what was a sultry day.
The city recorded a high of 40.5 degrees Celsius and a low of 30 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT office.
Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department had issued a warning about dust and thunder storm accompanied with light rain and squall with wind speed up to 70 to 80 kmph.
