Four cafeterias were constructed out of recycled material at the Delhi airport, at its international and domestic terminals for airport staff and visitors.
Everything in the cafeterias, including the table tops, grid ceilings, seating arrangements, is built with the scrap from the airport building, dismantled parts of machines and plastic structures and recycled material, according to Hindustan Times.
The cafeterias are located in Terminal 3 and Terminal 2. One of them is on level three of Terminal 3 (T-3), another near the parking area, one in the basement of Terminal 3 and one near the entry area of Terminal 2.
The cafeterias were built completely using scrap which was generated from the renovation of the Terminal 1D and Terminal-3, said an officer from airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).
A Delhi International Airport Ltd spokesperson said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, "Furniture has also been built out of scrap and reusable fabric. We have also reused concrete leftover boards to cover the exposed wires and surfaces of the walls. Lamp shades put in the cafeterias are also made from recycled material."
The spokesperson said that as the airport expansion works are underway, the authorities are expecting to process "massive quantities of waste or refurbished materials and use those creatively to build several such facilities."
