A 20-year-old Dalit girl from Kancheepuram was found hanging in a private garden on Thursday morning, police sources said.

Hailing from Aandi Siruvallur village near Walajabad, she was working in a private company in Kancheepuram. On 21 November, she did not come back home.

Her family lodged a missing persons complaint at the Kancheepuram Taluk police station on 23 November.

The woman's father said in the police complaint that he suspected the culprit to be Rajesh, a man his daughter was in a relationship with and belongs to a dominant caste. The police have arrested him as a suspect, reported The News Minute.

Police are also looking into how this incident took place on someone else's private property.

A few political groups like VCK and CPM also took to the streets.

In the complaint to the police, the father had alleged that he had told his daughter to forget Rajesh since he belonged to a dominant caste group, reported The News Minute. Rajesh had allegedly told her father on the day she went missing that he would drop her back home.

The police have registered the case under Section 306 of the IPC (Abetment to suicide) and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Sources said they are still investigating the claims made by the parent.

The cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report is ready, cops said.
