Ravi Sisodia, one of the 18 accused in the Dadri lynching case, was cremated in his native village Bishda on Friday evening after his family reached an agreement on compensation with the local authorities. The amount was increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh by the Uttar Pradesh government.
The accused, allegedly involved in the killing of Mohammad Akhlaq last year for allegedly consuming and storing beef, was shifted from prison to a Delhi hospital with "suspected dengue symptoms". He died of kidney and respiratory failure on Wednesday.
Suspecting "foul play", his relatives along with other villagers refused to cremate Sisodia's body, which was kept in a freezer draped in the Indian flag. They staged protests and demanded a sum of Rs one crore, action against Akhlaq's brother Jaan Mohammad, a job for one of Sisodia’s family members and a CBI probe.
Union Minister Mahesh Sharma visited the village and met with the family members of the deceased on Friday. The negotiations reached a conclusion during a three-hour meeting between the local administration and Sisodia's kin. Sharma, along with MLA Sangeet Som, also handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to them.
Gautam Budh Nagar's District Magistrate NP Singh told Indian Express that “the state government will give Rs 10 lakh and another Rs 10 lakh will be given by social institutions. The state government has also agreed to recommend a CBI inquiry in the case once a written request from the family is received.”
