Cracks have appeared on a Kolkata flyover which had collapsed in 2013. The Ultadanga flyover, which connects VIP Road and EM Bypass, has been closed down after an inspection team observed the cracks.

For a city that has been hit by news of flyover collapses more than once in the recent past, the most troubling aspect of this development regarding the Ultadanga flyover is that officials have reportedly said that the cracks appeared on the same span of the flyover that had collapsed in March 2013.

The span in question is a 40-metre curved steel structure. After the collapse in 2013, the flyover had remained non-operational for one-and-a-half years.

For now, the flyover has been closed off for at least three days, effective from 7 pm on Tuesday, 9 July. The inspection of the cracks in the flyover was done by a joint team of the Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police and officials of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.
