In an attempt to tackle the issue of case pendency and corruption, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has suggested filling vacancies and not allowing leaves for judges on working days.
CJI Gogoi, on 5 October, spoke with chief justices and senior judges of high court on video conference over loopholes causing the slowing of system.
At present, approximately three crore cases are pending combined in Supreme Court, high courts and trial courts, according to the National Judicial Data Grid.
He insisted no judicial officer should be allowed to take leaves on working days except in cases of emergencies. The plan also stressed for judges to plan family vacations far in advance and no leave travel concession (LTC)s to be availed by them during working days.
In order to fight corruption, CJI also stressed the need to appoint advocates with good incomes as judges which will prevent them from being tempted by money.
For reducing the pendency of cases in high courts, CJI has asked the CJs to first identify the cases and remove the ones which have become unfruitful. He has also asked the CJs to identify appeals which have been filed by those in jails and those which are pending for more than five years, reported The Times of India.
