3-Yr-Old Boy Dies After Falling Into Sump in Telangana Play School

3-year-old Shiva’s death raises questions about safety and oversight of children at schools and playschools.

A three-year-old boy, Shiva, died in a children’s play school in Telangana after he fell into a sump at his school and drowned, on the afternoon of 14 November. The incident took place at a play school in Shivapuri Colony in Malkajgiri, Telangana, on the afternoon of Children’s Day.

Shiva’s father dropped him at school around 8:30 a.m. He’s believed to have fallen into the open sump shortly after, as reported Mirror Now. School authorities reportedly alerted his family, when his mother came to the school around 11:30 am to bring Shiva’s lunch to him.

It is unclear what was the boy doing when the incident took place. According to Mirror Now, the boy may have fallen into the sump which was near the school’s entrance, while he was entering the school’s premises. However, Telangana Today reported that the boy may have fallen into the sump when the children were playing on the school’s premises.

When his mother reached the play school at 11:30 am to give him the lunch box, she was informed that he had been rushed to a hospital because of an emergency. In the meantime, the hospital doctors declared him brought dead.

Police charged the school’s authorities with negligence and are currently investigating the incident. The school was shut after police arrived at the scene.
