1. Court Reserves Verdict in Ilaiyaraaja Case

The Madras High Court on Tuesday reserved its judgment on a civil suit preferred by Malaysia-based music label Agi Music in 2013 accusing music composer Ilaiyaraaja of having breached the terms of a 2007 assignment agreement through which he had reportedly assigned his copyright in relation to the songs composed by him to his wife who, in turn, had supposedly entered into a Sound Recording Licensing Agreement (SRLA) with the plaintiff company.

Justice Anita Sumanth also deferred her verdict on a separate suit filed by Mr Ilaiyaraaja in 2014 to restrain Agi Music, Echo Recording, Giri Trading Company and a few others from selling his compositions.

2. Top Transport Official Booked

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has booked Additional Transport Commissioner P Muruganandham in a disproportional assets case after searches on his premises revealed properties/valuables 255 percent more than his known sources of income.

Based on specific information, the agency registered a case against the official and searched his houses in Tiruchi, Karur and Coimbatore on Saturday.

On completion of the operation, DVAC officials said the total value of properties, including gold jewellery and immovable assets, was found to be Rs 2.38 crore.

3. Disability Rights Activists Protest

Disability rights activists who protested in the city on Wednesday were arrested in the evening and later released. The protest followed the rejection of a visually impaired candidate’s nomination in Dharmapuri for an upcoming co-operative society election.

Activists said M Rajendran, Commissioner, Tamil Nadu State Co-operative Societies Election Commission, told them that as per legal opinion, a candidate with visual impairment could not contest on the grounds that they ‘could not read or write.’ However, the activists disputed it and said it was against the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

4. MLA Files Contempt Plea Against Speaker

An MLA from Puducherry has filed a contempt petition against Puducherry Assembly Speaker V Vaithilingam and Legislature Secretary A Vincent Nayar at the Madras High Court on Wednesday.

V Saminathan, one of the three nominated MLAs of the BJP, filed the contempt petition against the two for “wilful disobedience and deliberative non-compliance/violation of order dated 22 March of the Madras High Court”.

5. Public Lure Burglars Out With ‘Safe Exit’

Who said only criminals are smart? On Tuesday night, members of the public in Orathur, near Tambaram, bashed up two burglars after luring them out of the house they were looting, promising them that they will not be harmed.

A few residents, who passed by the house, noticed lights burning in the house.

The television set was on too. They peered in through the window and were shocked to see strangers inside. They locked the door from the outside and alerted the Manimangalam police. Those inside had no escape route.

6. This Summer Become a Zoo Ambassador

This summer holidays, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur will offer a new type of education-cum-entertainment camp for children enabling them to become ‘zoo ambassadors.’ The Zoo School will have interactive sessions by experts, who will teach children about topics related to the environment.

The programme is for four days (9 am to 12.30 pm from Wednesday to Saturday) and only five batches are available. Each batch will have 30 children. On completion of this programme, the children will become ‘Zoo Ambassadors of Vandalur Zoo.’ They will get a zoo passport for free visits up to 10 times for a year.

7. Defer Cooperative Polls: DMK

Alleging large-scale irregularities in the filing of nominations for elections to the cooperative bodies in Tamil Nadu, the DMK has sought Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s intervention to conduct free and fair elections to all the co-operative societies by accepting all the valid nominations filed by the DMK’s candidates. The opposition party has also sought to defer the cooperative polls until the alleged irregularities are set right.
