Chennai: 1 Dead, 32 Injured As Building Collapses; 2 Arrested

Eight ambulances and three fire tenders are currently at the spot to facilitate rescue operations.

Three Workers Critically Injured

According to a report in The Times of India, three of the injured workers have been admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, ten others have been rushed to a government hospital in nearby Saidapet, while five others have been admitted at Injambakkam's Emergency and Trauma Care centre.

TN CM Condoles Death, Two Arrested

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisami condoled the death of 19-year-old Babloo at an under-construction site on Saturday.

The Chief Minister also announced a compensation of five lakh rupees for the family of the deceased.

2 people have been arrested with regard to the incident. Investigations are underway.

Injury Count Rises to 32

“A total of 32 people have been injured and sent to Apollo Hospital and Royapettah government hospital. The body of the dead man, Babloo from Bihar, was recovered late yesterday (Saturday) night”, Rajendra Ratnoo, Commissioner, Disaster Management, Tamil Nadu told The News Minute.

“To ensure that there is nobody else trapped inside the debris, we are clearing it out. Our teams from National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, the District Collector and myself are at the accident site since last night and are monitoring the rescue operations. We are awaiting bigger cranes and gas cutters to get through the debris and will clear it out soon,” he added.

One Man Found Dead

Reports confirm that the disaster response force have found one person dead under the debris. Rescue operations are still on and firefighters are looking for any other trapped persons.

“Unfortunately, one person identified as Bablu died. Twenty-seven people have been rescued and are undergoing treatment as in-patients at hospitals," health secretary J Radhakrishnan told PTI.

Besides, five were treated as out-patients

Rescuers say that they will clear the entire debris to ensure no one is trapped underneath.

'Strict action will be taken against the construction company'

Minister Udhayakumar said that the cause of the accident is still not known yet.

"Construction workers are supposed to be wearing safety equipment and adhere to the requirements. Strict action will be taken against the construction company that is building this hospital," he told The News Minute.

“The main structure is safe," he added.

The building, located opposite to SP Infocity on MGR Salai, is that of a new hospital that was coming up in the area.
