The Supreme Court on Monday, 19 March, admitted an appeal filed by Khumkala Banjade, the wife of the deceased domestic help, Hemraj, for further hearing in the 2008 twin murder case, in which he was murdered along with Aarushi Talwar.

Challenging the Allahabad High Court’s acquittal of Aarushi’s parents – Rajesh and Nupur Talwar – in the sensational case, Hemraj’s wife had filed a petition in the top court on 15 December last year. The couple had been held not guilty on the basis of the evidence on record on 12 October 2017. They were released from the Dasna jail in Ghaziabad after four years in prison.

CBI Moves SC Against Talwars’ Acquittal

Earlier, on 8 March, the CBI had moved the Supreme Court against the Talwars’ acquittal in the double murder case, according to NDTV.

Fourteen-year-old Aarushi was found murdered in the Talwars’ Noida flat on 16 May 2008. The next day, their domestic help Hemraj’s body was found on the roof of the building. The body was hidden behind a cooler panel.

In November 2013, a lower court at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh found the Talwars guilty of both murders and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

Hemraj’s Family Not Satisfied With Verdict

In an earlier exclusive to The Quint, Samir Singh, who has been guiding Hemraj’s family through the legal procedures, had indicated the family’s displeasure with the Talwars’ acquittal. Singh is Hemraj’s son-in-law’s employer, and has known Hemraj’s family for over 20 years. He has reportedly employed a Supreme Court lawyer to fight the case on a pro-bono basis.
