1. Candlelight After Gunshots
Students, teachers, and journalists took part in three rallies in the Kolkata on 6 September to protest the murder of Gauri Lankesh, a journalist known for her anti- establishment views.
Lankesh, the editor of Kannada weekly Lankesh Patrike and a critic of the Sangh Parivar's brand of Hindutva, was shot dead outside her home in Bangalore on 5 September. Outside the Calcutta Press Club, more than 300 journalists took part in a march. “No pain can stop the pen,” read one of the posters.

2. Warrants For Gurung, 7 Other Leaders
A Darjeeling court on 6 September issued arrest warrants against Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung and seven other party leaders, including his wife Asha and Roshan Giri, on the appeal of the Bengal CID citing a June 9 FIR related to arson and violence.
The warrant is expected to ease jurisdictional and legal issues that led to a Sikkim-Bengal face-off following the September 1 cross-border raids by the Bengal cops.

3. Finally, Peace Rally on Hill Streets
After more than 100 pro-bandh rallies in various towns across the hills over the past 87 days, rebel GJM leader Binay Tamang led one from chowrasta to Chowk Bazar on 6 September demanding restoration of normalcy in Darjeeling.
The crowd in the evening rally wasn't much -- about 150 turned up with candles. But, it was significant nonetheless given that people had dared to step out and voice their frustration over the indefinite strike in GJM supremo Bimal Gurung's stronghold.

4. Teen Uses Blue Whale Scare To Avoid Getting Dumped
Survey Park cops are counselling a Class 12 student from south suburban Kolkata after he tried to use the Blue Whale scare to stop his girlfriend from ending their relationship.
The cops picked up the 17-year-old boy on 6 September from an area close to Santoshpur after he uploaded a photograph of his injured hand on social media. “I have carved a specific phrase, a F-32 along with a Blue Whale, on my arm. First task successfully completed,” the boy wrote on Facebook.

5. Gujarat Riot Photo or Basirhat? BJP Neta Faces Cop Grilling
Delhi BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma appeared before the Shakespeare Sarani police on 6 September, following a Calcutta High Court order asking her to meet the investigating officer at least once every month.
Sharma is presently on bail after a case was lodged against her by Kolkata Police for a tweet where she had posted a picture of the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying it was taken during violence in Basirhat.

6. Stadium Cancels Booking For Amit Shah Event
The BJP on 6 September alleged that a state-owned indoor stadium, where party president Amit Shah was scheduled to attend a programme next week, had cancelled the booking for the event. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal claimed it had nothing to do with it.

7. SRFTI Students Demand Registrar's Resignation
Students of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) have demanded the Registrar's resignation alleging he passed sexist and casteist comments against them. The Registrar, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless.
Additional general secretary of SRFTI’s Students’ Association Debottam Basu said, “We have given 11 complaint letters to the director. One of the complainants said that he didn't allow her father to help her shift her luggage to another wing because the Registrar felt her father might look at the SRFTI girls inappropriately. Comments have also been made about the girls' complexion.’’

8. Dengue Claims 71-Year-Old's Life
A 71-year-old woman died of "dengue shock syndrome" at a Baguiati Nursing Home early on 6 September. At least six persons, including children, have died in the recent dengue outbreak in the Kolkata.
Dengue has reared its head in several localities under South Dum Dum Municipality, including Madhugar and Purba Sinthee Road, about 7 km from Kestopur where Smritikana Choudhury lived.

9. ‘Feeling Blessed With Mother As Patron’
As the church bells rang and the Missionaries of Charity nuns sang hymns, the Archbishop of Calcutta Thomas D'Souza declared Mother Teresa as the second patron of the Archdiocese of Calcutta in the presence of the Vatican's ambassador to India, Giambattista Diquattro, at a solemn mass in the Cathedral of the Holy Rosary on Portuguese Church Street on Wednesday. St. Francis Xavier was declared the first patron when the Archdiocese of Calcutta was established in 1886. The Archdiocese of Calcutta issued a decree at Wednesday's mass declaring Mother Teresa as co- patron.
