Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the maiden Budget of the Modi 2.0 government, announced a refreshed series of coins along with a new Rs 20 coin.
Preexisting coins of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 3, Rs 5, and Rs 10 will be refreshed with new design features. The series will now also include a Rs 20 coin.
Stating that the new coins will have new features, the finance minister added that they will be easily distinguishable.
These coins were released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7 March 2019, and will be made available to the public shortly.
The announcement sparked reactions on Twitter, with some excited to get their hands on the new coins.
Among other notable takeaways from the Budget, the Finance Minister also proposed to issue Aadhaar to NRIs with Indian passport without the mandatory 180-day waiting period and said that “Gaon, Garib and Kisan” will be the focus of the government in their projects.
