The Bharatiya Janata Party unseated the Left from its last bastion in Tripura, and is set to join the government in Nagaland as the party continued its winning streak in the Northeast.
While the Congress emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya with 21 seats, the BJP, with just two seats, may still get a shot at power as a junior partner with the National People's Party that won 19. The party will now be in power in six out of seven states in the Northeast.
“It is a journey from no one to number one, from 'shoonya to shikhar' (zero to pinnacle),” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, addressing BJP workers at the newly built party headquarters in the national capital after the results. He called party President Amit Shah the architect of the victory.
