A Banaras Hindu University (BHU) student was shot dead in the college campus on the evening of Tuesday, 2 April, by unknown assailants.

Police has arrested four BHU students in the matter, reported news agency ANI. The university Chief Proctor Royana Singh has also been named in the the first information report (FIR), according to an NDTV report.

An MCA student, Gaurav Singh, was shot near the Birla Hostel in the university premises when some unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at him, said a police official. The report says four people on two bikes shot at Gaurav.

The report adds that Gaurav Singh had been suspended by the university last year for his alleged role in the violence that occurred in the campus in 2017 over students' safety. He was accused of burning down a bus, the report said.

Singh was talking to his friends around 6:30 pm on Tuesday when he was shot at by four assailants on two bikes.

He was then rushed to the trauma centre for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries, the police said.

The circle officer at Varanasi Cantt said that four people have been arrested in the matter and personal enmity was identified as the motive.

It was reported that Singh sustained bullets on his stomach and had taken three bullets of the ten fired on him.

The NDTV report said one of Singh’s friends has claimed that the four people who shot him were seen at Chief Proctor Royana Singh's office a few days ago.

The University has been closed on Thursday following tensions after the murder. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the campus and students have been urged to maintain the calm, the report added.
