After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation of high-value currency, we’ve all been hearing about the long queues outside banks and ATMs, the strong rhetoric about black money, and all the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of the move. But have you heard the songs crooning about the currency ban?

From the utterly colourful Bhojpuri music industry, the country’s very own ‘rapper’ Baba Sehgal, to one of India’s most popular singers Sonu Nigam – there has been a slew of songs on the hot topic.

Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Hindi and even English – people have come up with songs in all languages from all corners of the country.

Some are lauding the move, some are highlighting the plight of people, while some are just making music, good or bad, depending on who hears them.

Bhojpuri is leading the pack with the most songs on demonetisation.

Sonu Nigam’s take on the move, Kaagaz, talks of a better tomorrow.

This song in English pays an “ode to old 500 rupee note”.

Nishwan Bhullar, a Punjabi singer, was one of the first people to come up with a song right after the announcement.

Rajasthani music also contributed to the list.

Another Rajasthani ‘DJ song’ is all praise for Prime Minister Modi’s move.

The voices from down south expressed their opinions through music as well.

This group of women from Coimbatore have been going around the city singing funeral songs for the “death of ATMs”.

This man from Telangana also made a song on black money.

These songs are all about what the whole country is feeling and talking about right now – after all, art imitates life?
