1. Violent Clashes in Belagavi Where Karnataka Assembly Session Is On

A clash between two groups turned violent in Belagavi on Wednesday night. The mob torched at least five vehicles at the spot before being dispersed by the police.

The reasons for the clash is yet to be ascertained and an investigation has been launched. Senior police officers told The Quint that other than a policeman, who was injured in stone pelting, no other injuries have been reported. Police and reserve police teams were reportedly deployed to the spot to curb the violence.

“There was a clash between two groups in Belagavi on Wednesday. We have dispersed the crowd, however five vehicles were burnt during clashes. We formed teams to investigate the matter. There was no police firing. We are investigating case further,”Amaranth Reddy, DCP, Belagavi said.

2. Private Hospital OPDs in Bengaluru Shut Indefinitely from Thursday

All outpatient departments (OPDs) in private hospitals and nursing homes across Bengaluru will shut indefinitely from 8 am on Thursday. In 14 districts of the state, private hospitals have already started their protest. The hospitals are opposing amendments proposed to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act, 2007.

The Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (PHANA), along with other medical associations, called for the protest in solidarity with the indefinite strike already under way in Belagavi by members of the Indian Medical Association, Karnataka chapter. As many as 22,000 doctors have joined the protest.

3. Anti-Padmavati Protests Hit Bengaluru, Hindu Groups Threaten Violence if Film Releases

Hundreds of activists belonging to various Rajput and Hindu groups gathered in Bengaluru’s Town Hall and marched towards Freedom Park on Wednesday, opposing the release of upcoming Bollywood film Padmavati.

The Rashtriya Rajput Karnika Sena spearheaded the 'Swabhiman Abhiyan' on Wednesday. They had called for an outright ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati after initially asking for the film to be approved by the community.  They claim that the biopic has distorted facts.

They engaged in vile sloganeering against the filmmaker and threatened violence if the film is allowed to release. The biopic starring Deepika Padukone, who portrays the role of the 13th century Rajput queen, is slated to hit the screens across the country on 1 December.

4. Karnataka HC Confirms Death Penalty for Serial Killer Cyanide Mohan

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday upheld the death penalty imposed upon serial killer Cyanide Mohan in relation to murder of one Sunanda , a resident of Sullia in February 2008.

A division bench comprising Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice John Michael Cunha, while allowing the criminal reference case, noted that there are aggravating circumstances to impose maximum punishment (death penalty) upon Mohan, who is said to have involved in at least 20 such instances wherein women were killed using Cyanide .

The court had upheld him guilty for offences under section 302(murder), 328(Causing hurt by means of poison) 417 (Cheating). However, the court acquitted him for offences under section 366(kidnap) and 376( rape) in relation to this case.

5. Karnataka legislature makes it mandatory for private establishments to put up CCTVs

The Karnataka legislature passed a law on Wednesday making all private establishments and public spaces, including shopping malls, educational institutions, religious places, bus stands, railway stations, industrial establishments, sports complexes etc. to mandatorily set up closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to assist the government every time when called upon.

Having been passed by the legislative assembly earlier this year, the legislative council saw a one and half hour debate weighing the pros and cons of setting up CCTVs in private establishments and whether it would increase police interference in their day-to-day working.

6. BJP Announces Candidates for MLC Elections

BJP announced its candidates for the upcoming MLC elections in the State scheduled for June 2018, on Wednesday.

The candidates are: senior party leader from Shivamogga Ayanur Manjunath for South West Graduates constituency, Ganesh Karnik for South West Teachers constituency, B Niranjan Murthy for South Teachers constituency, KB Srinivas for North East Graduates constituency, Dr Haalanur S Lepakshi for South East Teachers constituency and a recent entrant into the party A Devegowda for Bengaluru Graduates constituency.
