Vajpayee’s Funeral: Which Delhi Roads to Take and Which to Avoid

Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee breathed his last on 16 August 2018.

Vajpayee’s mortal remains will be brought to the BJP headquarters at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg at 9 am, following which he will be accorded a state funeral at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4 pm on Friday, 17 August.

As the country mourns the loss of one of its charismatic prime ministers, the Delhi Police has issued a traffic advisory for the national capital, bearing in mind the funeral procession.

Almost all roads leading to central Delhi including Krishna Menon Marg, Akbar Road, Janpath and India Gate C-Hexagon, among others, will remain closed from 8 am onwards for the public on Friday in order to ensure smooth vehicular movement during Vajpayee’s final journey.

Here’s the List of Roads That Have Been Closed from 8 am:

  • Krishna Menon Road, Sunehri Bagh Road, Tughlak Road, Akbar road, Akbar Road, Tees January Road, Janpath from Claridge Hotel to Windsor Place, Mansingh Road, C-Hexagon from Shahjahan Road to Tilak Marg
  • Rajpath from Mansingh Road to C-Hexagon, Ashok Road from Windsor Place to C-Hexagon, KG Marg from Feroz Shah Road to C-hexagon, Copernicus Marg from Mandi House to C-Hexagon, Shahjahan Road, Zakir Hussain Marg from SBM to India Gate
  • Tilak Marg from C-Hexagon to Tilak Bridge, Bhagwan Das Road, Sikandara Road, Mathura Road from Bairon Marg T point to W point, BSZ Marg from Tilak Bridge to Delhi Gate, IP Marg, DDU Marg, JLN Marg from Rajghat to Delhi Gate

Funeral Procession Route of Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Vajpayee’s mortal remains will be taken to the BJP headquarters at 9 am, and will be open to the public to pay their tributes to the leader.

The funeral procession will start from 1:00 pm at the BJP headquarters, and will pass through Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg and Shanti Van to reach Rashtriya Smriti Sthal where the BJP leader will be cremated at 4pm.

Delhi Police has also put out a list of alternate routes to ensure smooth traffic in Delhi, but has advised the citizens to leave their cars at home and use the Delhi Metro.

List of Alternate Routes

North-South Access

1. Aurobindo Marg - Safdarjung Road - Mother Teresa Crescent - Park Street - Mandir Marg - Panchkuian Road - Rani Jhansi Road and reach the destination in North Delhi and vice versa.

2. Reach Connaught Place - Minto Road - Bhavbhuti Marg - Ajmeri Gate - Shraddhanand Marg - Lahori Gate Chowk - Naya Bazar - Peeli Kothi - SP Mukherjee Marg and then reach the destination in North Delhi and vice versa.

3. Ring Road ISBT (Kashmere Gate) - Salim Garh bypass Road (Upper Ring Road ) - IP Estate Flyover and vice versa.

4. Reach Nizamuddin Bridge to cross Yamuna - Pushta Road - GT Road and cross over to ISBT and reach the destination in North Delhi and vice versa.

East-West Corridor

DND-NH24 - Vikas Marg - Shandara Bridge and Wazirabad Bridge will remain open to reach Ring Road.

Vikas Marg - T/L Ring Road -T/R to Mathura Road - Bhairon Marg towards New Delhi.

Traffic will also not be permitted on lower Ring Road from ISBT Kashmere Gate towards Shantivan and from IP flyover towards Rajghat.
