Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January in India, to commemorate Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa (then a Lieutenant General) taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
The date of the transfer of power was 15 January 1949.
