1. Kritika Chaudhary's Ex Husband Had Conned Ekta Kapoor, Govinda

The court has extended the police custody of Vijay Dwivedi, former husband of slain actress Kritika Choudhary, who was arrested in Saturday for fraud. According to police sources, Amboli cops had appealed to the court for an extension of his two-day custody, so they could interrogate Dwivedi further.

Apparently, after his dreams of foraying into Bollywood were quashed, Dwivedi used unscrupulous ways to con various members of the film fraternity, including television actions and producers. The property cell of the Mumbai arrested Dwivedi in 2012 after he conned several people posing as Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi's son. "He's wanted in a series of cheating cases. In 2010, he was arrested by Delhi cops for conning senior Suresh Kalmadi," said a cop from Amboli police station.

Later, in 2016, he conned actress Shweta Tiwari, actor Govinda and producer Ekta Kapoor too, introducing himself as Janardan Dwivedi's son.

Activists, a few film personalities and youth today staged a protest here, opposing 'community-targeted' mob lynchings.

Actors Shabana Azmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rajat Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin and social media activist Arpita Chatterjee were among those who participated in the protest held at Carter Road in suburban Bandra this evening.

Braving rains, protesters marched silently, holding posters and placards bearing slogans. "Killing over food. Not in my Name," read a placard.

"Today's protest was against the savage culture of mob lynching," journalist and author Rana Ayyub said.

Speaking to PTI, Shabana Azmi said, "We are demanding a law against mob lynching. I am a proud citizen of my country. This protest that has happened across the country is not specifically in support of Junaid (victim of lynching on Mathura-Delhi train a few days ago)... It's for all forms of mob lynching, be it of police officer in Srinagar or Junaid or anyone. There is no fear of law....They (culprits) know nobody will do anything. We must recognise that citizens coming together led to justice in Nirbhaya case, so we need do this more. The government needs to take notice and create fear of and the perpetrators should be punished," she said.

4. 17-Yr-Old Drowns Off Marine Drive Trying To Take A Selfie

The latest in a string of victims to the selfie craze, a 17-yearold girl drowned off Marine Drive on Tuesday afternoon, while taking selfies with her friends. In a separate incident, the Colaba police saved a 20-year-old from drowning near The Bombay Presidency Radio Club on Tuesday night.

Marine Drive police say that repeated public service announcements to be wary of the powerful waves and stay away from the promenade have fallen on deaf ears. “Our police station’s bandobast is in Marine Drive,” said Senior PI Vilas Gangavane.

Priti Shrikrishna Pise, a resident of Chunabhatti, had visited the promenade next to Taraporewala Aquarium with friends on Tuesday afternoon. “They were sitting on the promenade and taking photos, when a sudden wave hit Priti and pulled her into the water,” said a police officer.

Her friends tried to pull her out but she had floated out too far. One of her friends jumped in to rescue her and was injured in the process. Police constable Tejas Sonawane, who was at Marine Drive with his family, pulled out Pise’s body after the waves had subsided “She was rushed to Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, where she was declared dead,” said the officer.

6. No Contractors To Fill Potholes On Highways

If you have been driving down the Western or Eastern Express Highways regularly, and find the commute to be worse than usual, here’s the reason. There is no one to fill potholes on the roads in the monsoon as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is yet to appoint contractors for the same. The two highways were handed over by the Public Works Department (PWD) to the MMRDA for a period of five years in mid-April, in an attempt to skirt the Supreme Court’s ban on liquor sale within 500 metres of highways.

Less than a fortnight into the monsoon, and with barely two to three days of heavy rains, the two arterial roads have already developed potholes. MMRDA officials said that the agency had scrapped bids worth Rs 13 crore to carry out pre-monsoon repairs on the two arterial roads after four attempts to get contractors failed.

On Wednesday evening, when Mumbai Mirror contacted MMRDA for their response, they said they had zeroed in on contractors for the two roads. “We were having problems since we could not find contractors but we have got bids now and work orders will be issued soon,” informed Dilip Kawathkar, deputy metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

7. 100 Jet-Skiing Lifeguards To Secure Beaches

If you looked in awe at beaches in western films for the safety apparatus and well-equipped lifeguards there, here's some good news for you. More than 100 lifeguards, with binoculars, whistles and jet skis, will soon be posted at six of the most-visited beaches in Mumbai, fire brigade officials said. And to ensure that every nook and cranny is under their eyes, lifeguards will do surveillance from wooden beach towers.

Chief fire officer P Rahangdale said, "The existing lifeguards try to deter people from venturing out in the sea, but people get into the water somehow. Therefore, we are planning to bring in 93 more lifeguards and deploy them at Girgaum, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Gorai and Aksa beaches." These 93 lifeguards are proposed to be stationed at the beaches all through the year and not just during the monsoon.
