It is said that big things come in small packages. Well, an incredibly big gesture was shown by Tim Mahoney, a 54-year-old residing in Kentucky to travel over 12,000 km to Dehradun and deliver a prosthetic limb to the injured police horse, Shaktimaan.

The 14-year-old police horse grabbed headlines when during a protest led by BJP workers, it was allegedly thrashed by Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi, leaving the animal with a broken leg. Later, the broken leg had to be amputated.

According to a Times of India report, Mahoney came across a Facebook post by artificial limb expert Jamie Vaughan talking about Shaktiman’s tragedy. The post read that since it took 8 to 10 days for an artificial limb to be couriered to Dehradun from Virginia in the US, would anyone travelling to India be willing to carry the limb with them.

Mahoney volunteered to carry the artificial limb to India with the sole purpose of delivering the leg to the animal in pain and discomfort.

I saw the post and immediately took the decision to deliver the artificial leg to Dehradun.

The American’s jovial manner and devotion to Shaktiman has earned him quite a few admirers in the city, including SSP (Dehradun) Sadanand Date.

No words of praise will ever be enough for such a man. We need more such people in the world.
