Kolkata is already known as the City of Joy, and now its residents have all the more reason to cheer as they can enjoy stronger Airtel 4G network throughout the city. This is because, last month, in a one-of-its-kind move, Airtel announced the shutdown of its 3G network in Kolkata. Globally, this is one of the first phase-outs of 3G technology.
Mobile broadband services in Kolkata are now available on high-speed 4G.
The telco has re-farmed its 3G spectrum to further strengthen its 4G network across the city. What this means for the people of Kolkata is that now they will enjoy high-speed 4G services on their phones, improved 4G availability across public spaces in the city and a consistently superior network experience. They could be at home, in the metro, shopping in the mall or just about anywhere in the city, and they will always have access to strong mobile internet.
Kolkata is just the beginning. Going forward, the telco plans to gradually phase out 3G services across the country as it strengthens 4G.
This very well complements the smartphone ecosystem that is rapidly moving towards 4G-only devices. Airtel’s plans also bode well for a country such as India that is becoming increasingly smartphone-first.
Whether it’s entertainment, banking or even dating, more and more Indians are turning to their smartphones. Improved 4G services across the country will ensure that consumers get just the kind of mobile experience they want – smooth and without any interruptions, and who better than Airtel to give them that. After all, the telco has been consistently hailed as India’s fastest mobile network by a number of globally renowned platforms.
For Kolkata customers who still use feature phones, Airtel will continue to provide 2G services.
So far, we were only hearing about the 3G network sunset, but Airtel’s latest move shows that now it’s almost here. Are they hinting at a potential 5G rollout soon? It’s exciting to see where this goes from here. As for being an Indian smartphone user, there definitely couldn’t have been a better time!
