An FIR has been filed against an assistant professor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for allegedly harassing and beating a female student of the social sciences department, News18 reported. The accused identified as Rajbeer Singh teaches at the Centre for studies in science policy, centre for social sciences, and is yet to be arrested, a police officer told News18.
According to News18, the student alleged the professor got aggressive and started beating the girl on 9 February after she sought his support for a strike at the university along with her fellow friends.
The woman had complained to the police on 9 February but the FIR was lodged under section 354 and 506 of the IPC on Wednesday, 2 May, the report added.
The woman and her fellow classmates were also threatened with dire consequences in case they disclosed the details of the incident to anyone, she alleged, the report said.
The incident comes a little over a month after JNU professor Atul Johri was arrested for sexual misconduct by at least nine students.
