Citizens of Hyderabad were in for a shock following the heavy rains on Wednesday when alleged toxic froth, many metres high, overflowed onto the road at Liberty and Allwyn Colony.
The Deccan Chronicle reported:
A ‘chemical nala’ overflowed in Jeedimetla, Quthbullapur and mixed with tank water. Locals alleged that the dark chemical water mixed with rainwater and entered their houses by Wednesday morning... In Quthbullapur, water from the Vennalagadda tank mixed with a chemical drain and overflowed.
Speaking to DC, the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) member secretary Mr Anil Kumar said, “Our officials visited these colonies on Wednesday and collected samples. We will be testing them. But our officials maintain that no effluents from industrial areas have joined floodwaters or entered water tanks.”
Meanwhile, district authorities in Hyderabad evacuated people living in low-lying areas around the Hussainsagar Lake and issued a possible flood alert.
Speaking to Times of India, Musheerabad mandal tehsildar S Ramulu said “Sensing the danger, we have evacuated nearly 500 families from two major slum areas Arundhati Nagar and Sabarmathi Nagar which are severely affected due to floods. These two areas are located near an open ‘nala’ (behind NTR Stadium, Indira Park). We have kept all the evacuated families in a community hall and are providing them meals.”
Meanwhile, IMD officials predicted more rainfall for the city on Thursday.
