According to The Hindu, the incident happened when the police team was on a search operation at Akuraha Dhala, under the Panapur police outpost. On a tip off that a big consignment of illegal alcohol was to cross Akuraha Dhal, the policemen were assigned to a vehicular check duty.

The Hindu reported a police official saying:

A speeding container truck was seen coming and when the policemen signalled it to stop, its driver increased the speed, mowed them down and sped away.

“Five police officials died on the spot after a speeding container truck hit them and four others, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Krishna Murari Prasad and Panapur outpost incharge Dhurvanath Jha were injured”, said Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of police Vivek Kumar.

The police team on the search operation was led by the DSP, reported HT.

“Prima facie, it appears that the truck was at a high speed and the driver lost control over the vehicle. Whether the driver was in an inebriated condition or fell asleep on the wheels will be known only when he is arrested.”
