Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently made an appeal to the Muslim community, that they should judge him on the basis of his actions and his government’s performance. Not claims from the Opposition bench of the Parliament.
During a recently concluded BJP Membership Drive reports coming in from various states show that there has been drastic jump in the number of Muslims joining the right wing party.
The latest update said that around 30 lakh Muslims had joined BJP in the recent drive.
These members have been inducted through ‘missed calls’, and party workers involved with the drive say that it is an unprecedented increase in the BJP cadres.
Abdul Rasheed Ansari, the party’s national minority cell chief, said that the exact strength of Muslims in the party was never calculated and went on to add that the recent increase has roughly doubled their numbers.
States where BJP is in power have seen the maximum surge in Muslims joining the party, around 4 lakh have joined in MP, followed by Gujarat (2.6 lakh), Delhi (2.5 lakh), West Bengal (2.3 lakh) Rajasthan and Assam (over 2 lakh each), the UP BJP has also recorded around 1.75 lakh ‘missed calls’ from Muslims, membership figures made available to The Times of India by the BJP’s minority cell indicate.
The BJP intends to ensure that a majority of the 30 lakh Muslims who have joined are converted into party workers through its on-going mass contact programme.
The party think-tank seems to be quite happy about the rise in the number of Muslim members in the party. The number of Muslims in the UP BJP has never touched the 1 lakh-mark, but this year has received ‘missed calls’ from 1.75 members of the minority community. Confirming the figures, state minority cell chief Rumana Siddiqui, said that in Muzaffarnagar, which was hit by communal riots in 2013, 15,000 Muslims have joined the party.
