17 Out of the World’s 20 Fastest Growing Cities Are In India

India will be home to 17 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing cities.

Over the next two decades, Indian cities will race ahead of much of the world.

According to Oxford Economics, 17 spots among the top 20 fastest growing cities in the world are held by India.

Surat, the diamond processing and trading centre in Gujarat, is expected to see the fastest growth from 2019-2035, wrote Richard Holt, Oxford's head of global cities research, in a report. Agra, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Nagpur fill the top slots after Surat.

The southern metros – Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai – featuring in the list are known to be Information Technology hotspots and also home to financial, manufacturing and service-oriented firms.

Three cities in Tamil Nadu – Tiruppur, Trichy (spelled as Tiruchirappalli in the table) and Chennai – figure at the sixth, eighth and ninth places respectively.

Though the economic output would not equal that of the world’s other mega cities, the aggregated gross domestic product of all Asian cities will exceed that of all North American and European urban centres combined in 2027, reported NDTV.

New York will still be the largest urban economy in the world in 2035 with the largest finance and business services sector. It will be followed by Tokyo and Los Angeles, with Shanghai tied with London for the fourth place, a Times of India report said.

The fastest-growing African city is the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam, while the top spot in Europe is held by the Armenian capital of Yerevan, according to the NDTV report.
