Twenty six ultras, mostly of the lower rung cadres, have given up their arms in Sukma district and surrendered to the Chattisgarh police on Tuesday. The police unit is considering this a big win against naxalism in the Bastar region.

SRP Kalluri, the Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), said that it was a great boost for the Bastar police who had successfully had gunned down 18 rebels in separate gun battles last month. Most of them were commander-rank cadres.

Altogether 26 rebels, five of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, turned themselves in before Sukma Collector Neeraj Bansod. Kalluri quoted senior police and CRPF officials at Polamapalli police station and said the surrendered naxals were disappointed with the ideology of the outlawed Maoist movement.

The surrendered rebels were in the age group of 20-45 years. They have been accused of being involved in loot, arson and attacks on the police party in the region, the IG said.

They were working for different sub-groups and frontal outfits of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) group. The surrendered members include those from Jantana Sarkar, Jan Militia and Sangham. Upon surrendering, each of them was given Rs 10,000.

IG Kalluri also said that as per the policy of Chhattisgarh government, necessary assistance will be provided to them.
