Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Friday requested the government to stop appointing Chief Justices of India as governors. He suggested that top bureaucrats should also be considered for these positions.

It is extremely unfortunate that an ex-Chief Justice of India of this country has been offered governorship in one of the states. This should not have been done,” Banerjee said.

He was referring to former CJI P Sathasivam’s appointment as Kerala governor by the NDA government. Banerjee was participating in a Lok Sabha debate on High Court and the Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill.

Congress member SP Muddahanumegowda started the debate and asked the government to bring a bill on judicial accountability.
