The Secretary of the Telecommunication Department of India, Rakesh Garg was shunted out to the Minority Affairs Ministry on Friday.

The 1980 batch UP cadre IAS officer will be replaced by the current secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, JS Deepak.

Rakesh Garg was the Additional Resident Commissioner at the UP Bhavan in New Delhi till July 2014 when he was transferred to the telecom ministry.

The decision was approved by the appointments committee of the Union Cabinet, an official statement said.

Both the departments come under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology headed by Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The telecom ministry has been under the Prime Minister Office’s scanner due to the call drop issue.

Aruna Sharma, a Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS from Garg’s batch, will replace Deepak as IT secretary.

Deepak, according to an Economic Times report, was the first one to pull off an e-auction of spectrum in the year 2010 and raised over Rs 1,000 crore.
