Two-year-old Sujith fell into a borewell while playing near his house on Friday, 25 October, in a village near Manapparai town, between Trichy and Maduria. Initially, at a depth of 30 feet, the child has slipped further down a 100 feet, even as rescue operations have been underway for over 50 hours.
Twitter has been abuzz with responses from Kollywood and the political world, in addition to suggestions and tweets of prayers.
“Children falling into deep open borewells by accident has become an epidemic in Tamil Nadu. The efforts of the rescue teams must become successful. To leave borewells open without covering or closing them must be made a crime that should invite stiff penalties.”Kamal Haasan, on Twitter.
Rajinikanth, instead of putting out a statement on Twitter, chose to hold an impromptu press conference, to wish his fans on the occasion of Deepavali and also to direct the media's attention towards the rescue operations. This is what he had to say;
“My heartfelt Deepavali wishes to all. I also pray with all my heart for the safe return of Sujith, who is stuck...various machines are being employed in the rescue operations...but those who left the borewell open should have had more caution, and the parents of the child too should have been more careful.”Rajinikanth, at a press meet outside his residence
Tamil Nadu Weatherman, who shot to fame through his timely and highly accurate weather predictions during the 2015 floods, Varda cyclone and more, also tweeted out.
