The Supreme Court ban on registration of diesel vehicles above 2000cc will continue, the court decided on Monday. The apex court is likely to hear automakers’ plea after summer vacations.

Backing the automobile makers, the Centre argued that diesel is not the only fuel that is polluting the environment, petrol and CNG also contribute.

The court cannot ban diesel vehicles if they are adhering to prescribed standard. Vehicles are not the only source of pollution.

Diesel-run all-India tourist permit taxis which ferry BPO employees in Delhi-NCR will also be exempt from the Supreme Court ban, according to The Times of India.

However, the ban on diesel taxis which was introduced in 2015 due to increasing pollution in Delhi, will continue until the next hearing.
