Sanjiv Chaturvedi, Anshu Gupta Chosen for Ramon Magsaysay Award

Two Indians have been chosen for the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award this year. It will be given on August 31.

Two Indians have been chosen for this year’s Ramon Magsaysay award. Whistleblower Sajiv Chaturvedi and Founder of NGO Goonj Anshu Gupta have been selected for the prestigious award in Manila, Philippines.

Chaturvedi was the Chief Vigilance Officer at AIIMS, a post from which he was removed after he exposed an alleged scam.

Why Sajiv Chaturvedi?

The citation by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation says that he is being given the award for,

  • His exemplary integrity, courage and tenacity in uncompromisingly exposing and painstakingly investigating corruption in public office
  • His resolute crafting of the program and system improvements to ensure that government honourably serves the people of India.

Anshu Gupta, the Founder of Goonj has also been chosen this year. 

Why Anshu Gupta?

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation in its citation says he is being awarded for,

  • His creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India.
  • His enterprising leadership in treating cloth as a sustainable development resource for the poor.
  • In reminding the world that true giving always respects and preserves human dignity

There are three others who will be formally given the award at the presentation ceremony which will be held on August 31, 2015. The award will be given at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
