A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker was hacked to death in his house in Pappinissery, Kerala, late at night on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as PV Sujith (27). His parents, who tried to prevent the assailants were also injured in the attack. The incident occurred at around 11.30 pm when a group stormed into Sujith’s house with weapons at Pappinissery under the Valapattanam police station.
Having received multiple stab injuries in the attack, Sujith was rushed to hospital. He was brought dead to the hospital.
The incident comes after a political calm in Kannur, which frequently witnesses violent clashes between the CPI(M) and the BJP.
On 1 December 1999, K P Jayakrishnan Master, a BJP leader was hacked to death, allegedly by CPI(M) workers, in front of his students while he was taking a class.
BJP President from the Kannur District of Kerala, Satyaprakash told reporters that CPI(M) was allegedly behind the attack. He alleged that the CPI(M) carried out the action to whip up violence to get over the embarrassment of the arrest of party district secretary P Jayarajan.
Jayarajan is an accused in a murder case of a BJP functionary from 2014.
BJP is observing a hartal in Kannur, Papinesseri and Azhikode areas to protest against the killing.
CPI(M) State Secretary Kodieryi Balakrishnan said the attack was not political and was a purely local issue which had nothing to do with the CPI(M).
Police have intensified law and order measures in view of the tension following the incident.
Police said some CPI(M) sympathisers have been taken into custody for questioning.
