- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena inaugurated the Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna on Saturday.
- The stadium has been renovated by the Indian government at a cost of over Rs 7 crore. It is expected to help promote sports and assist in the overall development of the youth in the majorly Hindu populated northern province of Sri Lanka.
- Joining the event via video-conference from New Delhi, PM Modi described it as a “landmark day”, adding that India will “walk side by side” with Sri Lanka as it charts its own path to progress and prosperity for all its citizens.
- The Sri Lankan President, thanking India for it’s financial assistance in the project, described the occasion as one “which will strengthen relations between India and Sri Lanka”
