Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, reportedly attempted suicide in Tihar Jail by consuming anti-depressants, and tried to hang himself using a cloth tied to an iron grill on Wednesday night at around 9:30 pm.
He was caught in the act by a Tamil Nadu special police personnel and admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital at 12:02 am on Thursday morning, where his condition is said to be stable.
His lawyer, AP Sharma, said that it was not an attempted suicide but an attempt at murder.
Last year, Sharma had demanded extra security as he feared for his safety in the jail. He also said that he was physically assaulted by other inmates and police officials.
In 2013, Ram Singh, the main accused in the infamous case, had committed suicide just hours before he had to appear in court for trial proceedings.
Jyoti Singh was brutally gangraped by Ram Singh and his accomplices on 16 December 2012 on a moving bus in Delhi. She succumbed to her injuries a few days later.
