The Supreme Court on Tuesday banned the 1,400 year-old practice of instant 'triple talaq' among Sunni Muslims, and set it aside on several grounds, including that it was against the basic tenets of the Holy Quran and violated the Islamic law Shariat.
A five-judge Constitution bench, by a majority of 3:2, in which the Chief Justice JS Khehar found himself in a minority, said in a one line order:
In view of the different opinions recorded by a majority of 3:2, the practice of ‘talaq-e-biddat’ – triple talaq is set aside.
The Quint spoke to the Muslims across the country to find out how they felt about the verdict.
Nida Khan from Bareilly hailed the verdict and said that instant triple talaq curbed women’s rights. Parveen Bano from Lucknow also expressed her happiness over the verdict.
Sudiya from New Delhi said that the verdict will increase the seriousness of triple talaq and men will think twice before pronouncing instant triple talaq.
It’s a valid decision considering how things are today. The decision has increased the seriousness of divorce. If one wants to do it, then think it through, and take proper steps instead of just sitting there and pronouncing triple talaq.Sudiya
Meanwhile, there were also Muslims that felt that the verdict is an intrusion into Muslim personal law.

Azeem Uddin from Moradabad added that he will follow the rules laid down under Quran and Hadith.
