BJP leader Dayashankar Singh, who was arrested after being expelled from the party for his derogatory remarks against the popular dalit leader Mayawati, was released from Mau jail on Sunday after being granted bail.

The The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) dubbed the court order as “not in keeping with law” and said it will be challenged in Allahabad High Court.

The party on 21 July had lodged an FIR against Singh for comparing BSP supremo Mayawati to a “prostitute.” His comments led to a furore in the Parliament, forcing the BJP to remove him as the party’s UP Vice President.

Mayawati is breaking the dream of Kanshi Ram into pieces. Mayawati is selling tickets... Mayawati gives tickets for Rs 1 crore and if there is someone who can give Rs 2 crore than she sells it for Rs 2 crore within an hour. If someone is ready to give Rs 3 crore by the evening, she gives the ticket to him. Today her character is worse than that of a prostitute.

Dayashankar Singh Cornered

Mayawati said the remarks by the BJP leader reflected the “capitalistic mindset” of the BJP and asserted that irrespective of the ideological differences, she had never in her political career used any derogatory or personal remarks against her adversaries or questioned their character.

However, Dayashankar Singh later entered damage control mode, claiming it was a slip of the tongue.

Mayawati is a big leader and came from a small family. I did not want to hurt anyone. I regret the slip of tongue. I never meant to hurt the dignity of anyone.
