A 17-year-old girl was hacked to death by a 21-year-old man in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, according to a Hindustan Times report. While locals allege that the man killed the girl because she rejected his marriage proposals, police say that the killing was a part of a suicide pact between the girl and the man.
The Two Contradictory Versions
According to Hindustan Times, the girl, a student of class 11, was returning from college on Wednesday evening with her cousin and others, when she was stopped by Amarpal on the outskirts of her village.
Amarpal then allegedly dragged her near the village graveyard and hacked her with a sharped edged farming instrument before escaping, say the locals. They also say that he would often harass her for rejecting his proposal.
According to Shamli superintendent of police (SP), however, the two were in love but their families were not in favour of their relationship and hence, they decided to end their lives.
The SP said to HT that Amarpal first killed the girl and then tried to commit suicide on a railway track, but was spotted and arrested by police.
Officials also said that the man had given mobile phones to the girl twice so that they could stay in touch, but her grandmother had found out and taken them away.
