The Maharashtra government has informed the Bombay High Court about the withdrawal of its August 27 circular on the application of the sedition law.
The guidelines on IPC 124-A have been issued with regard to the assurance given to the Bombay High Court in the case of the cartoonist Aseem Trivedi.
The assurance was given in the high court while sedition charges were dropped against Trivedi, who was arrested by Mumbai police in 2012 for drawing cartoons that allegedly insulted the national emblem and Parliament.
A BJP spokesperson from Maharashtra, Sanju Verma, had defended the circular, saying that anti-national speech must be dealt with the criminal law.
The Opposition had, however, condemned the guidelines in the circular.
