51 Girls Rescued From Confinement With Help of Chits They Dropped

Police is investigating whether the madarsa was being run illegally or was registered.

As many as 51 girls were rescued on 30 December after a raid was conducted on a madarsa in the old city area of Lucknow, following complaints of sexual harassment of the inmates by the institute's manager, police said.

A senior police official said the madrasa’s (Islamic religious school) manager Mohammad Taiyab Zia was arrested.

Acting on a tip off by the locals, a police team carried out a raid at Madarsa Jamia Khadeejtul Qubra Lilabnat in Yasinganj area under Saadatganj police station last night, police said.

According to an NDTV report, the girls wrote about their ordeal on chits and threw the chits out of the window, following which the neighbours alerted law enforcement agencies. On Saturday, Zia was produced in court, which sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.

The manager was arrested and 51 girls being held hostage in the institution in the old city area were rescued following the raid.

Police said as they made arrangements for sending the inmates to their parents. While these arrangements were being made the girls narrated their ordeal alleging inhumane treatment and molestation by the accused.

The police is carrying out investigation to ascertain whether the madarsa was being run illegally or was registered.

According to the police, more than 100 girls study at the madarsa.
