JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and deceased PhD student Rohith Vemula have become the faces for Congress in the upcoming Assam elections in April if posters are to be believed.
Interestingly, Kanhaiya is affiliated to left party CPI(M) and Suprakash Talukdar, Assam secretariat member of the party while speaking to Economic Times, said that:
It is good that Congress stood by Kanhaiya and is using his picture to depict the NDA government’s high-handedness but we have got in touch with Kanhaiya, he is likely to campaign for Left parties in Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi came out in full support of Kanhaiya and said that he approves of some of the issues raised by the student leader.
Gogoi is putting in full effort to ensure his party, Congress retains the top spot in the state this time too. He planned to rope in Prashant Kishore for his election campaign but it did not work out since Kishore suggested replacement of Gogoi as Assam CM.
Left parties are contesting around 59 seats in Assam.
