Justice TS Thakur will soon succeed Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu as the Chief Justice of India.

Chief Justice of India, HL Dattu, who will retire on December 2, has recommended the name of Justice Thakur, the senior most judge, as his successor.

It is customary and conventional for the senior-most judge to be appointed as the CJI.

HL Dattu was appointed as CJI on September 5, 2014, and assumed office starting September 28, 2014.

Recently, CJI Dattu had refused to participate in the hearing for establishment of a new appointment body, National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC) to replace the collegium system of judiciary.

The CJI and his four senior most judges collectively form the collegium, according to a consultation paper published by the Law Ministry.
