On Wednesday, an Indian-American couple was ordered to pay $7.75 million ahead of their sentencing in a health care fraud case. Kirtish N Patel, 53 and Nita K Patel, 53 have pleaded guilty.
Kirtish and Nita Patel operated Biosound Medical Services and Heart Solution PC of Parsippany and provided analysis of tests on individuals’ vital organs and body parts, according to a report in The American Bazaar. They forged signatures of physicians and billed Medicare for neurological tests.
More than half of the diagnostic reports generated by Biosound between October 2008 and June 2014 were never reviewed by a physician, said reports. They continued to scam people until one of the health care staff blew the whistle on them. The whistle-blower is entitled to 15 to 25 per cent of the fine amount.
Nita and Kirtish were paid more than $4,386,133.75 by Medicare and private insurance companies for the fraudulent reports, a sum they used for personal expenses like multiple residences and luxury vehicles.
