The union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on Thursday hiked the annual fee for all the IITs by over Rs 1 lakh. The fee after the hike stands at Rs 2 lakh while the previous one was Rs 90,000.

The ministry also approved 100% waiver of fees for the SC/ST, OBC and physically disabled from families with annual income below Rs 1 lakh. The panel headed by IIT Roorkee had suggested a fee hike of Rs 3 lakh.
The
final call was taken by the ministry which kept it at Rs 2 lakh. A formal announcement
will be made soon, according to The Times
of India.

All the IITs have a considerable quota of 15% for SCs,
7.5% for STs and 27% for OBCs. In a recent ranking released by HRD ministry, the
four new ones – Ropar, Gandhinagar, Patna and Hyderabad – made it to the top
ten while IIT Madras was adjudged the best institute for engineering, defeating
IIT-Bombay and the IIT-Kharagpur.
